Airport Response to Controversial Federal Shutdown Video Made to Play During TSA Security

Detroit and Sawyer airports face Hatch Act scrutiny after showing a DHS video blaming Democrats for the shutdown; several other Michigan airports declined to air it.

  • Currently, the video is being played on monitors in TSA-leased spaces at Detroit Metropolitan Airport , and the Wayne County Airport Authority said the Department of Homeland Security did not contact it about the message.
  • Last week the video began playing and it blames Democrats in Congress for the federal government shutdown, noting many Transportation Security Administration employees work without pay as the two-week mark nears.
  • Sawyer Regional Airport near Marquette is showing the clip, while Lansing's Capital Region International Airport, Gerald R. Ford International Airport, Bishop International Airport, Traverse City Cherry Capital Airport, Saginaw's MBS International Airport, and Kalamazoo/Battle Creek International Airport are not, officials said Thursday.
  • The Wayne County Airport Authority asked the Transportation Security Administration to stop playing the video Wednesday, citing customer experience and airport rules, while Democratic state Rep. Noah Arbit said it may violate the U.S. Hatch Act .
  • With hundreds of thousands of annual enplanements at Michigan airports, officials warn the clip's polarizing nature could add stress and create safety risks for travelers and TSA screening workforce.
