Marc Roger Maurice Louis Bohan was born in Versailles on August 22, 1926, the son of a businessman and a milliner. In 1945, he arrived in Paris without friends or useful contacts and, determined to follow an artistic career, looked for work as an illustrator. He submitted sketches to Robert Piguet, one of the most important couturiers of the period. He was taken on as a fashion illustrator, with fellow recruit Hubert de Givenchy.
