Deputies shoot suspect in domestic violence call
Deputy Antonio Gonzalez fatally shot Mario Camacho, who was choking a 7-year-old, preventing further harm and saving the child, officials said.
- On Sunday afternoon, deputies responded shortly after 2:00 p.m. to a domestic violence call at the 100 block of Alpine Drive in Brandon, and HCSO confirmed they shot the suspect during the response.
- Responding deputies say they heard the child scream and found the suspect choking a 7-year-old and armed with a knife, barricaded in a back bedroom refusing commands.
- Deputy Antonio Gonzalez, 25, fired one shot during the encounter and has five years with HCSO, including four years in Detention and 11 months as Law Enforcement, with no other use-of-force incidents.
- After the shooting, deputies rescued the child and provided first aid before transporting the suspect to Brandon Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased at 2:47 p.m.; the FDLE is investigating and body‑cam video will be released soon.
- The suspect was identified as Mario Camacho, 27, who had 2023 convictions for domestic violence battery, simple battery, and a threat to do violence, and was subject to a Baker Act involuntary examination in July 2024 while wearing a motorcycle helmet and two ballistic vests.
