A major study found that adults with depression show disrupted production of new neurons in the hippocampus, potentially weakening the brain’s ability to separate new experiences from painful memories. The researchers also identified broad molecular changes that could open the door to new treatments tailored to different biological forms of depression.
One study shows for the first time that neurogenesis or the formation of new neurons is stagnating in the brains of adults with major depressive disorder: the creation of these brain cells in the adult hippocampus is crucial, as most of the 100 billion brain neurons are created before birth. This would explain the reduction of the ability to adapt to a changing environment in people with this type of depression.
