Michigan Democrats Will Have a Trifecta in Lansing After Re-Gaining Control of House
Democrats will control both chambers and the governor’s office after flipping the House and adding Senate seats, their largest legislative edge in decades.
On Tuesday, Michigan Democrats flipped the state House and expanded their Senate majority, securing a governing "trifecta" alongside the election of Governor-elect Jocelyn Benson.
Historic voter turnout saw nearly 5 million residents cast ballots as Democrats defended incumbents and flipped several hotly contested seats to reclaim full legislative control.
Democrats secured at least 60 of 110 House seats and a 23-15 Senate majority, the largest margin in almost 50 years, giving the party commanding control in both chambers.
Governor Gretchen Whitmer stated, "Securing this historic Democratic trifecta sends a clear message that Michiganders want leaders who are focused on lowering costs," signaling continued work on healthcare and taxes.
Beyond the legislature, balloting ensured Democrats maintain control of the Michigan Supreme Court, state boards, and the attorney general's office for the next two years.
