Democratic socialist Melat Kiros projected to win U.S. House race in Colorado
Kiros defeated Republican Christy Peterson and unaffiliated Shimon Blau with 78% of the vote, extending Democratic control of the seat.
On Tuesday, Denver voters elected democratic socialist Melat Kiros to represent Colorado's 1st Congressional District with 78% of the vote. The Associated Press called the race shortly after polls closed, with Kiros defeating Republican Cristy Petersen and independent Shimon Blau.
The 29-year-old attorney unseated 15-term incumbent Diana DeGette in the June primary, marking the first change in the district's House representation since January 3, 1997. Her shock victory positioned her as the likely winner in the heavily Democratic district.
Independent candidate Shimon Blau launched a bid after Kiros declined to label a 2025 firebombing in Boulder as an act of antisemitism. Blau, a 50-year-old physician, also criticized her comments regarding the Israel-Hamas war, finishing with 6% of the vote.
Elsewhere, Republican Representative Lauren Boebert faced a tight race against Democrat Eileen Laubacher in the 4th Congressional District, while incumbent Republican Representative Jeff Hurd remained in a dead heat against Democratic challenger Dwayne Romero in the 3rd Congressional District.
Kiros joins a nationwide wave of progressive insurgents backed by groups like Justice Democrats and the Democratic Socialists of America. Her platform, which includes Medicare for All, signals potential shifts for House Democrats as she prepares to take office.
