Democrat Lakesha Womack Wins Election to U.S. House in North Carolina's 14th Congressional District
Womack won with 51.11% of the vote, flipping a district rated Solid Republican despite questions over her residency and a past felony summons.
On Tuesday, Democrat LaKesha Womack unseated incumbent Republican Rep. Tim Moore in North Carolina's 14th Congressional District, winning by more than 7,000 votes. The victory marks a major upset, flipping a seat Moore won by about 16 points two years earlier.
Womack, who experienced homelessness a decade ago, campaigned on affordability and health care costs. She positioned herself as a pragmatic problem-solver, emphasizing that "good policy should matter more than political loyalty."
The race grew contentious in final weeks as Moore's campaign highlighted a 2019 felony summons regarding an unreturned rental car and questioned Womack's district residency. Womack rejected the allegations, accusing the campaign of playing "political games."
With all precincts reporting, Womack secured 51.1 percent of the vote compared to 48.9 percent for Moore. This win is one of many seats Democrats flipped on Tuesday, helping the party regain control of Congress.
Womack told Queen City News on Wednesday that voters sent a clear message regarding economic concerns. She plans to focus on stabilizing the economy to ensure those facing hard times do not remain in that position.
