Weiser wins Colorado governor race, succeeding Polis
The Democrat won after leading Republican Victor Marx and Independent Greg Lopez in the race, according to the Associated Press.
- Democrat Phil Weiser won the election for governor of Colorado on Tuesday, defeating Republican Victor Marx with The Associated Press projecting the victory at 9:00 p.m. EST as Weiser held 81.1% to 15%.
- Colorado has elected only one Republican governor in the past 50 years as the electorate turned distinctly blue. Weiser succeeds term-limited Democratic Gov. Jared Polis, who served eight years in office.
- Weiser previously served as dean of the Colorado Law School and held positions in the Barack Obama and Bill Clinton administrations. He defeated Sen. Michael Bennet in the Democratic nomination race earlier this year.
- Republican Victor Marx, a Christian ministry leader and Marine Corps veteran, entered the race with a social media following nearly 3 million, defeating Sen. Barbara Kirkmeyer and Rep. Scott Bottoms in the GOP primary.
- The new governor inherits a state grappling with repeated billion-dollar budget deficits, while Independent Greg Lopez, an Air Force veteran, also challenged in the general election.
