Democrat Chris Coons wins reelection to U.S. Senate from Delaware
Coons will begin his third full term after easily defeating Republican physician Mike Katz, with the Associated Press calling the race at 8 p.m.
On Tuesday, Delawareans reelected incumbent U.S. Sen. Chris Coons to the Senate, defeating Republican challenger Mike Katz and securing his third full term.
Delaware has not elected a Republican senator in 53 years, a streak predating Joe Biden's Senate tenure; Coons has represented the state since 2010 after winning a special election when Biden became Vice President.
Senator Coons serves on the Appropriations, Foreign Relations, Judiciary, Small Business and Entrepreneurship, and Ethics committees; he holds the position of vice chairman of the Ethics Committee.
The Associated Press called the race at 8 p.m., securing Coons' path to his third full term beginning in 2027.
Before joining the Senate, Coons served as New Castle County Executive from 2005 to 2010, having previously been president of the New Castle County Council from 2001 to 2005.
