Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. awards Food Market Trailblazer Award – The Courier News
FLINT, MI – The Flint Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, awarded the North Flint Food Market Cooperative the inaugural Catherine Jones Frederick Social Action Trailblazer Award. This recognition honors the Market’s outstanding example as an economic and social change-maker in the Flint community. From expanding access to fresh food to creating a community-owned space rooted in dignity, equity, and opportunity, the North Flint Food Market continues to show what is possible when people come together for lasting change. Located at 5402 North Clio Road in Flint, the North Flint Food Market provides residents in the surrounding area with access to a local market that was desperately needed after local and chain grocery stores closed. “This organization saw a need in the community and found a way to reduce a food desert while allowing residents to have ownership through a food co-op,” said Tamar Swain, president of the Flint Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Swain added: “The market is beautiful. Its presence in north Flint creates economic space while helping to improve access to much needed food options.” The North Flint Food Market is open daily from 8 a.m. – 8 p.m. For more information on the Market, visit www.northflintfoodmarket.org.
