Delhi Police seeks extension of custody of CJP leaders Saurav Das, Ashutosh Ranka
The police say the leaders breached peace bonds and entered a denotified protest site, while the High Court told them to wait for the magistrate’s decision.
- On Wednesday, the Delhi High Court urgently heard petitions from All India Students' Association president Neha Bora and Cockroach Janta Party leaders Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka challenging their detentions and bond notices.
- Authorities detained Das and Ranka on October 13 after they allegedly climbed into the denotified Jantar Mantar protest site, violating peace bonds furnished on October 10 against participating in activities disturbing public tranquility.
- During the hearing, Justice Subramonium Prasad questioned the leaders' ages—Das was 27 and Ranka was 31—remarking, "Then you are not Gen Z," and advised them to pursue revision in the lower court instead of writ petitions.
- Following the judge's guidance, the petitioners withdrew their plea, and a Special Executive Magistrate subsequently ordered Das and Ranka's release on Wednesday after accepting their sureties.
- Bora separately challenges an October 17 police notice requiring a Rs 10,000 peace bond, with her legal team arguing the notice constitutes a "colourable exercise of preventive powers to suppress peaceful dissent.
