One More Body Recovered From Delhi Building Collapse Site, Death Toll Rises to Three
Rescuers recovered a third body as police registered a culpable homicide case against the building owners and contractors.
On Saturday, the death toll from the Chawri Bazar building collapse rose to three after rescuers recovered another body from the debris. The three-storey structure in Old Delhi collapsed on Thursday.
Municipal Corporation of Delhi officials reported the structure was built without approval on a 50-square-metre plot. The collapse occurred while the roof slab was being laid using non-engineered material.
Delhi Police arrested three contractors—Siraj, Tajuddin, and Furkan—in Faridabad on Friday. DCP Rohit Rajbir Singh identified the third victim as 40-year-old Pankaj Sharma, a resident of Hanuman Nagar village in Bihar.
Police filed an FIR under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for culpable homicide not amounting to murder. Investigators are probing whether negligence or building norm violations contributed to the collapse.
Rescue operations by the National Disaster Response Force and Fire Services continue, though narrow lanes restrict heavy machinery movement. Teams are clearing rubble manually while searching for anyone still trapped beneath the remains.
