Germany’s Hockey League Is Upset at the NHL’s Plan to Play Games There
German league officials say the NHL planned two December games without consultation, creating clashes with the schedules of 28 professional clubs, Tripcke said.
The National Hockey League scheduled two regular-season games in Duesseldorf this December without consulting the German Ice Hockey League, sparking criticism from local leadership over missed coordination.
German Ice Hockey League managing director Gernot Tripcke stated the isolated scheduling "conflicts with the schedules of the 28 professional clubs" in Germany, urging collaboration for a "win-win situation."
Germany forward Tim Stützle and the Ottawa Senators will face the Chicago Blackhawks on Dec. 18 and 20, marking the NHL's first regular-season games in Germany in 15 years.
Tripcke stated, "I don't know what they're doing around the games," regarding future contests in Munich and Cologne, reflecting continued lack of communication with the NHL.
While the NHL aims to "grow the game" alongside the NHL Players Association, current friction reveals difficulties balancing international expansion with established domestic league schedules.
