McDavid Welcomes Hellebuyck’s Move East as NHL Reacts to Blockbuster Trade
The Jets ended months of speculation by sending the three-time Vezina Trophy winner east in a package deal, ending a league-wide trade chase.
On Friday, the Winnipeg Jets traded Connor Hellebuyck to the New Jersey Devils, ending months of speculation regarding the three-time Vezina Trophy and Hart Trophy winner.
Hellebuyck, 33, was suspended after missing training camp and the season's start; the team finalized the deal to remove distractions before the Heritage Classic and the date his salary payments resumed.
Winnipeg received forwards Dawson Mercer, Alexander Command, and Nick Bjugstad, plus goaltender Nico Daws, a 2027 seventh-round pick, and a 2029 second-round pick.
Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid said "I am certainly glad hes gone east" after practice Friday, while Colorado Avalanche head coach Jared Bednar noted it "doesn't hurt my feelings."
Buffalo Sabres goaltender Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen said the trade is "good for everybody" as it quiets league-wide speculation, noting that while noise is inherent to elite sports, players must learn to manage it.
