DeepMind’s new genome ‘atlas’ charts effects of all 9 billion human gene mutations
Google DeepMind says the atlas lets researchers rank variants with an AVI score and search predictions from a 1 petabyte dataset.
- On Tuesday, Google DeepMind released the AlphaGenome Atlas, a database containing a "predictive map of every possible DNA letter change in the human genome" to accelerate biological research and disease treatment development.
- Building on the AlphaGenome model released last year, the project draws inspiration from AlphaFold, the protein-structure prediction tool that earned Demis Hassabis and John Jumper the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.
- Google researchers also introduced the AlphaGenome Variant Impact score, a metric that ranks mutations by their potential biological effect to help scientists prioritize variants for closer study.
- Molecular biologist Julia Zeitlinger of the Stowers Institute for Medical Research noted the work "gives us a searchable dictionary for non-coding DNA," allowing researchers to bypass painstaking manual computation.
- While the database remains free for non-commercial use, commercial entities must license the 1-petabyte dataset, which provides predictions for roughly 9 billion potential single-letter DNA substitutions.
