Italian regulator hits Shein with 1 million euro greenwashing fine
ITALY, AUG 4 – Italy's competition authority fined Shein €1 million for overstating green credentials and making misleading claims about recyclability and emissions reductions, despite rising emissions in 2023 and 2024.
- Italy's consumer watchdog fined Shein €1 million for misleading environmental claims on its website in 2023 and 2024.
- The fine followed an investigation launched by AGCM last September into deceptive and vague green claims by Infinite Styles Services, which operates Shein's European website.
- AGCM found problematic content in multiple website sections, including 'evoluSHEIN,' overstating recyclability and sustainability, while emissions increased despite Shein’s pledge to cut them by 25% by 2030.
- The AGCM noted that the fine should reflect Shein's €3 million revenue in Italy for 2023 and highlighted that the company's misleading commercial practice started in January 2023 and continues to this day.
- Shein has cooperated fully, strengthened internal reviews, and improved its website, while facing similar enforcement, including a €40 million fine by France last month for related issues.
