Rescuers Scramble To Find Survivors Of Deadly Russian Strike On Kyiv

Officials said more than 80 people were injured as search and rescue teams continued work after strikes hit residential areas and infrastructure across the capital.

  • On Thursday, Russia launched a barrage of more than 70 missiles and nearly 500 drones at Kyiv, killing at least 25 people and injuring more than 80. Ukrainian officials described the overnight assault as a "night of horror" for the capital.
  • The Russian Defense Ministry declared the "massive attack" was a response to Ukraine's drone strikes on Russia. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov vowed Moscow will "continue increasing pressure" on Ukraine to achieve its military goals.
  • Strikes impacted more than 30 locations across every district of Kyiv, while the Sumy, Dnipro, Zaporizhzhia, Cherkasy, and Kharkiv areas also sustained damage. Kyiv mayor Vitali Klitschko declared a day of mourning with flags at half-mast on municipal buildings.
  • Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky thanked European partners while raising concerns about American aid speed. On Tuesday, the European Union disbursed the first installment of its €6 billion defense package for drone procurement.
  • European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos stated the assault highlights why Ukraine needs a credible path to European Union membership. Zelensky has long framed this bid as a way to bolster security guarantees amid Russian attacks.
