Deadly Crashes in PA Fell to Historic Low in 2025
PennDOT said impaired-driving and unbelted deaths fell to record lows, but bicyclist, teen-driver and older-driver fatalities increased.
- Pennsylvania traffic fatalities reached a record low in 2025 with 1,047 deaths, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation announced on Wednesday. This total is 80 fewer than in 2024, marking the lowest figure since record-keeping began in 1928.
- PennDOT credited safety investments for the decline, including more than $357 million in federal highway safety funds since 2023 and over $70 million in statewide behavioral safety grants. Infrastructure upgrades like rumble strips and warning signs supported these efforts.
- Fatalities dropped across several categories, with impaired-driving deaths falling from 342 to 258, the lowest on record. Lane-departure deaths declined from 537 to 492, while unbelted occupant fatalities dropped from 311 to 259, also record lows.
- Despite overall progress, fatalities involving aggressive driving rose more than 30% since 2020. Deaths also increased among teen drivers, bicyclists rising from 19 to 28, and drivers aged 65 to 74.
- Beginning June 5, 2026, drivers convicted of using a hand-held device will pay a $50 fine under Pennsylvania's hands-free law. PennDOT said "these behaviors are choices," urging motorists to obey traffic laws and remain focused.
