DEA asks watchdog to investigate claims that agents permitted fentanyl to hit the streets
The DEA asked the U.S. Justice Department’s internal watchdog to investigate claims that agents allowed fentanyl pills to enter New Mexico streets.
DEA Administrator Terry Cole said the investigation is needed due to public attention and questions about DEA oversight and decisions.
Cole clarified his request does not show lack of confidence in DEA personnel or their investigative decisions.
Agents criticized the strategy of letting counterfeit painkillers 'walk,' calling it reckless, dangerous, and potentially violating Justice Department rules amid a fentanyl epidemic.
Agents repeatedly watched — but did not seize — large shipments of synthetic opioids in an attempt to build larger criminal cases between 2023 and 2025.
