Days After Vijay's Oath, CPM Threatens to Withdraw Support over Backing From AIADMK Faction
P. Shanmugam said CPI(M) will reconsider support if TVK gives Cabinet posts to 24 AIADMK rebels who backed Vijay in the trust vote.
On Tuesday, Communist Party of India State secretary P. Shanmugam warned that his party would reconsider its support for the Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam government if Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay inducts AIADMK rebels into the Cabinet.
Governing with 108 of 234 seats, the TVK relies on external support from the Congress, which won five seats, and eight legislators from the Left parties, VCK, and Indian Union Muslim League.
During the May 13 trust vote, Vijay secured 144 votes, including support from 24 AIADMK lawmakers who defied party chief E Palaniswami to back the administration.
Shanmugam argued that accommodating AIADMK rebels would contradict the public mandate, as voters rejected both the DMK-led and AIADMK-led alliances, undermining transparent governance promises.
The Left parties backed the government primarily to prevent President's rule, which Shanmugam claimed could enable the "backdoor entry of the BJP's rule," though he expressed confidence the Chief Minister would avoid such appointments.
