- Benavidez moved up to the cruiserweight division to challenge Ramirez for his WBA and WBO titles, entering the contest as a 31-0 fighter nicknamed the "Mexican Monster" by Mike Tyson. The matchup represented his divisional debut.
- Dominating from the opening bell, Benavidez knocked Ramirez down in the fourth round before a final flurry of hooks to the head forced him to the canvas in the sixth. Ramirez could not beat the count after less than 18 minutes of action.
- In the ring afterward, Benavidez called out Canelo Alvarez, who was in attendance, stating, "I've got respect for Canelo, he's a great champion, but I'm a great champion too." The challenge electrified the crowd.
