Danny Boyle's Murdoch Film to Open Venice Festival
The Rupert Murdoch biopic will screen in Venice’s Sala Grande, with Studiocanal fully financing the film and releasing it in multiple markets.
On Thursday, organizers announced Danny Boyle's film Ink will open the 83rd Venice International Film Festival on September 2.
Ink dramatizes media tycoon Rupert Murdoch's 1969 acquisition of The Sun, which Boyle described as a paper that "challenged the establishment and remade our world."
Guy Pearce stars as Murdoch, with Jack O'Connell portraying editor Larry Lamb and Claire Foy as Jules Davies in this adaptation of James Graham's Tony-nominated play.
Venice artistic director Alberto Barbera praised the film as an "account of publisher Rupert Murdoch's acquisition of the daily newspaper The Sun," while Boyle called it his "baptism at the film festival."
The full 2026 film lineup will be revealed next week on July 23, with the festival running September 2 to September 12 at the Palazzo del Cinema.
A film about the media magnate Rupert Murdoch, directed by the British Danny Boyle, of "Trainspotting", will open the Venice Festival in September, announced the organization this Thursday (16). "Ink" tells how Murdoch bought, in 1969, the British tabloid The Sun and turned it into the country's best-selling newspaper combining sport, sex and right-wing politics.
