Dan Gilbert pledges $1 billion to redevelop Detroit’s Renaissance Center
Gilbert pledged $1 billion as the project aims to create affordable housing, small-business space and 2,600 permanent jobs, Rocket said.
- On Monday, October 19, businessman Dan Gilbert pledged $1 billion to establish a new nonprofit that will redevelop, own, and operate the Renaissance Center and surrounding 35-acre east riverfront district.
- Structured as a 501 social welfare organization, the nonprofit will reinvest all surplus proceeds into community benefits rather than return profits to Gilbert, Bedrock CEO Jared Fleisher emphasized.
- The $2.24 billion redevelopment plan transforms the site into a family-friendly waterfront destination, including nearly 1,000 housing units and 18 acres of programmed civic space.
- Detroit Branch NAACP President Reverend Wendell Anthony and former Rocket Companies CEO Bill Emerson will lead the inaugural board, while General Motors contributes $250 million and maintains sign-off rights on major decisions.
- Officials are seeking a $300 million Transformation Brownfield Program package for the project, with demolition scheduled to begin in 2027 as community benefits meetings continue.
