Man Dies After Warning Shooting in Dún Laoghaire Goes Wrong
Investigators believe Mark Cullen was not meant to die after a leg shot severed an artery and caused massive blood loss, sources said.
On Sunday, July 5, 2026, Mark Cullen, 39, died after being shot in the leg at Patrician Park in Dún Laoghaire around 8:30 a.m., with Gardaí launching an investigation into the fatal incident.
Investigators suspect the incident was a punishment shooting gone wrong; Cullen bled to death after a bullet severed an artery, though sources indicate the gunman likely intended only to wound him.
The fatal shooting marks the first in Ireland since May 2024, ending a period of relative calm in gun crime as 2025 marked the first year in nearly 60 years with no firearms-related murders.
A Senior Investigating Officer has been appointed to lead the probe, with Gardaí appealing for witnesses or dash-cam footage from Kill Avenue between 8:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. on Sunday.
No arrests have been made as the investigation continues into Cullen, who had been released from prison two weeks ago and had connections to a local crime gang.
