Russia Expels Hungarian Diplomats in Tit-for-Tat Move
Russia said the expulsions are a retaliatory measure after Hungary ordered 10 Russian diplomats to leave last month.
On Thursday, the Russian Foreign Ministry ordered a group of Hungarian diplomats stationed at the embassy in Moscow and consulates in St. Petersburg and Kazan to leave the country.
This action follows Hungary's decision last month to order 10 Russian diplomatic staff to leave, which Foreign Minister Anita Orb announced on September 8, citing national security concerns.
Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova previously warned the response would be "tough and painful," and Moscow described this as a retaliatory measure with affected personnel required to depart within two weeks.
The Hungarian Foreign Ministry took note of the decision, describing it as a response to Budapest's earlier measure while stating that Hungary's diplomatic presence in Russia will remain in place.
Hungary maintained it is not interested in an escalation of diplomatic tensions, emphasizing that operations at its missions in Russia will continue uninterrupted despite the latest expulsions.
