Bosnian Serb Leaders Meet with Russia’s President Vladimir Putin Ahead of Weekend Election in Bosnia
Bosnian Serb officials said Putin backed their vote as 3.4 million Bosnian voters prepare to choose a new presidency and parliament.
- On Tuesday, separatist leader Milorad Dodik and Prime Minister Savo Minic met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow just days ahead of Bosnia's general election this weekend.
- Bosnian Serb television RTRS reported that the politicians won support from Putin for the Sunday vote, as Dodik continues to dominate the pre-election campaign in the Serb-held region.
- While a chief Russian ally in the Balkans, Dodik has repeatedly clashed with Western officials; he remains banned from holding public office in Bosnia despite leading the ruling party.
- Dodik's calls for separating the Serb entity from Bosnia have sparked fears in the West of renewed instability, particularly as war continues to rage in Ukraine.
- Around 3.4 million voters will participate in the Oct. 4 election, choosing leadership for central institutions in a nation still struggling with ethnic tensions decades after the 1992-95 war.
