Cyclone Murasu weakens into deep depression, to become low-pressure area in 12 hours; IMD forecasts more rain in Andhra
The India Meteorological Department said the system will weaken further as it moves inland, while Vijayawada recorded about 100 mm of rain and waterlogging.
On Wednesday, November 4, 2026, Cyclone Murasu continued lashing Andhra Pradesh with heavy rain, weakening into a deep depression by 8:30 a.m. after crossing the coast near Ongole earlier in the week.
India selected the name "Murasu," meaning "war drum" in Tamil, for the storm, which arrived shortly after Cyclone Arnab hit the region in late October as a severe cyclonic system.
Ibrahimpatnam recorded 103 mm of rain during the 12-hour period from 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., while Vijayawada Rural received 100.8 mm, causing significant waterlogging across Vijayawada from continuous Tuesday rainfall.
NTR District Collector G. Lakshmisha declared a holiday for schools and colleges on Wednesday, while advising parents not to allow children to venture out unless absolutely necessary.
The India Meteorological Department warns that very heavy rainfall remains likely over Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam, urging residents to monitor official safety instructions and stay alert.
The remnant of Cyclone Murasu is now a depression centered over eastern Telangana and coastal Andhra Pradesh. It will continue to move northward and weaken into a low pressure area over the next 12 hours. Localized rainfall is likely to continue.
