Native American radio stations at risk as Congress looks to cut $1B in public broadcasting funding
UNITED STATES, JUL 17 – The Senate vote could eliminate $1.1 billion in funding vital to over 1,500 public radio and TV stations serving rural and tribal communities, threatening their survival.
- The U.S. Senate plans to vote by July 18 on a proposal to reduce more than $1 billion in funding allocated to the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, with the cuts set to begin on October 1, 2025.
- The cuts follow President Trump’s executive order in May aiming to end taxpayer subsidies to PBS and NPR due to perceived media bias, prompting lawsuits by both sides.
- These funding reductions threaten 59 tribal radio stations and dozens of rural public broadcasters, which provide essential local news, emergency alerts, and cultural programming to isolated communities.
- PBS president Paula Kerger warned cuts could eliminate half the funding for some rural stations, and Jaclyn Sallee emphasized the impact during Alaska’s fishing season when weather reports are vital.
- If enacted, many public and tribal stations may close, risking loss of critical community services and news access, especially in rural and Indigenous areas.
