Crunchyroll Responds to Claims of Data Breach

Crunchyroll is investigating after a hacker accessed 8 million support tickets via a third-party vendor and demanded $5 million ransom, with no direct payment data breach detected.

  • Crunchyroll confirmed a cyberattack involving third-party vendor Telus International, after a hacker compromised a support agent's Okta SSO account and allegedly exfiltrated eight million support tickets containing 6.8 million unique email addresses.
  • A threat actor told BleepingComputer they infected a support agent's computer with malware, gaining 24 hours of Okta SSO access; the hacker then demanded $5m in ransom for deleting the stolen data.
  • Stolen data includes usernames, IP addresses, and support ticket contents; the attacker also accessed internal systems including Slack, Mixpanel, and Google Workspace Mail, though Crunchyroll stated payment information was not directly compromised.
  • "We are aware of recent claims and are currently working closely with leading cyber security experts to investigate the matter," Crunchyroll said, adding it has not identified evidence of ongoing unauthorized access.
  • The streaming platform serves 15 million subscribers worldwide and operates as a joint venture between Sony Pictures Entertainment and Japan-based Aniplex, which Sony acquired for $1.18 billion in 2020.
