Croatian Soccer Fans Arrested over Anti-Semitic Slurs During Match with Amsterdam Team
Police arrested 12 fans after chants and flares disrupted the match, and officials said more suspects may be identified.
On Friday, Croatian police arrested 12 fans of Hajduk Split after thousands of supporters held an anti-Semitic rally before Thursday's Conference League match against Ajax.
Thousands marched toward the stadium behind a car carrying a mock coffin labeled "Ajax," chanting slogans referencing the Auschwitz concentration camp and the WWII pro-Nazi regime.
Hajduk Split won 2-1, though fans forced a 12-minute interruption by throwing flares; the club stated, "we are not proud of" the behavior but were "ready to take the consequences."
President Zoran Milanovic demanded sanctions to show "there is no place for glorification of Nazism in Croatia," while Ombudswoman Tena Simonovic Einwalter called the incident a "manifestation of hatred and intolerance."
Local police are identifying additional suspects, the Israeli Embassy in Zagreb expressed being "deeply shocked," and Croatia has previously faced stadium bans for discriminatory behavior.
