Critical minerals in focus as major Toronto mining conference underway
Canada announced $12.1 billion in investments and 30 partnerships to boost critical minerals projects amid rising global supply chain risks, officials said.
- At the PDAC conference on Monday, Natural Resources Minister Tim Hodgson announced 30 partnerships under the Canada-led Critical Minerals Production Alliance that the federal government said will unlock $12.1 billion.
- Industry leaders warned of heightened geopolitical risk and supply-chain vulnerability as rising global trade tensions and surging demand for copper, nickel and lithium push urgent action.
- Deals include up to $7 million for Greenland Resources' Malmbjerg project, $9.1 million for Cyclic Materials Inc.'s rare-earths recycling centre, and $16.7 million for First Phosphate, with a $40 million investment in the Canadian Digital Core Library, announced by Natural Resources Canada.
- A joint statement from Mark Carney, Prime Minister, and Narendra Modi included a memorandum of understanding on critical minerals value chains, and Hodgson added `Canada and our allies abroad are putting real capital behind the secure, sustainable supply chains that our economies and our defence industries depend on`.
- An RBC report out Friday said private funding shortfalls mean more government support will be needed, citing $2.4 billion in road and transmission funding for the Ring of Fire.
