Crew from NASA's simulated Mars mission emerges after 378 days in isolation
The four volunteers will begin two weeks of evaluations as NASA uses the mission’s data to plan future Moon and Mars flights.
- On Saturday, the Crew Health and Performance Exploration Analog mission 2 crew—Ross Elder, Ellen Ellis, Matthew Montgomery, and James Spicer—will emerge from their 378-day simulation at Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas.
- Since October 2025, the crew lived within a 158-square-metre habitat to study how isolation, distance, and 'Mars-like' communication delays affect humans preparing for deep space missions to the Red Planet.
- Crew members performed routine medical tasks including self-blood draws and heavy exercise throughout the mission. Volunteer Montgomery noted, "You can kind of see the finish line coming," as the assignment neared completion.
- Following the mission, the crew will undergo two weeks of post-mission evaluations while reuniting with families they contacted only via email during the year-long assignment. Ellis expressed anticipation, saying, "Seeing my husband smile at me when the egress door opens."
- Data from this mission will inform NASA's Human Research Program on requirements for future long-duration moon base and Mars voyages, according to chief scientist Michael Stenger. NASA is currently accepting applications for the next simulation.
