CPJ calls on Israel to release journalists detained on the Global Sumud Flotilla - Committee to Protect Journalists

At least 32 journalists were detained after Israeli naval forces intercepted the largest maritime aid convoy attempting to break the Gaza blockade, organizers said.

  • On October 1 and 2, the Committee to Protect Journalists demanded Israeli authorities immediately release the humanitarian crew of the Global Sumud Flotilla, which included at least 32 journalists.
  • On August 31, the Global Sumud Flotilla set sail from Spain with around 50 vessels carrying 500 to 700 activists from more than 40 countries to deliver aid and break Israel's naval blockade.
  • On Wednesday night, Israeli naval forces intercepted 44 ships and detained 223 activists, while Israeli police processed 470 activists at Ashdod port; journalists Yassine Al Gaidi, Hayat Al Yamani, Lotfi Hajji, and Anis Al Abbassi were aboard.
  • Families of detained activists demanded immediate release and urged the UK Government to intervene, with Jim Hickey's family saying `Jim had been in contact up until the boat he was travelling in was intercepted in the early hours of Thursday morning`.
  • Organizers have rejected accusations while the Israeli Foreign Ministry said all but one vessel were on their way to Israel and detained activists would be deported.
