Smith tells UCP separatists to move on from referendum or find a new party
Smith says the party must unite behind Canada after Albertans rejected a second binding referendum on separation.
On Tuesday, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith told United Conservative Party members to support Canada or leave the party, following Monday's referendum against holding a second separation vote.
Albertans voted on Monday against holding a binding separation referendum, prompting Smith to urge party unity. She acknowledged many UCP members voted against Confederation but insisted her government must respect the public mandate.
In a televised address from Calgary on Tuesday, Smith emphasized the "time to unite and fight for a stronger Alberta and Canada is now," warning against internal division.
UCP legislature member Jason Stephan, who advocated for a binding referendum, announced on Monday he will not seek re-election, while Smith expressed no ill will toward members who voted against Confederation.
Smith warned the party risks losing next year's provincial election to Naheed Nenshi's NDP, claiming they intend to "reopen the drug consumption sites we closed" and "bring back the production cap.
