Alberta pro-unity rally held in wake of CFB Wainwright fire on final day before vote
The rally came a day after four military members were killed in a fire at CFB Wainwright, as separatists campaigned for independence.
On Sunday, Alberta Federation of Labour leader Gil McGowan led a pro-unity rally at the legislature, holding a moment of silence for four military members killed in a massive fire at CFB Wainwright.
A violent fire at Wainwright, a major military training base about 200 kilometres southeast of Edmonton, killed four members and seriously injured dozens on Saturday; authorities are still investigating the cause.
Canadian defence investments contributed approximately $1.3 billion to Alberta's economy in the 2024–25 fiscal year, supporting approximately 10,300 Canadian Armed Forces members living and working in the province.
Forever Canadian leader Thomas Lukaszuk told demonstrators it was a "difficult day" to hold a rally, yet voters head to the polls tomorrow to decide Alberta's future regarding Confederation.
Polls across the province will be open Monday from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m., with results on the independence question expected to start trickling out in the wee hours of Tuesday morning.
