PM Carney says Alberta's choice of unity is 'a great result' for Canada
Carney praised the vote as a win for Canada after more than 1.3 million Albertans cast ballots in the provincewide referendum.
On Oct. 20, 2026, Albertans voted in overwhelming numbers to remain in Confederation. More than 1.3 million voters participated, with early returns showing about three-quarters backing the status quo.
Prime Minister Mark Carney called the outcome "a great result for Canada," telling reporters Albertans "have chosen to build together." He and Smith discussed co-operative federalism and support for victims of the CFB Wainwright fire.
Smith praised the result as a vote for a stronger Alberta in a united Canada and will deliver a TV address tomorrow night to outline next steps. Pro-Canada supporters cheered at rallies across Alberta on Monday night.
Despite the decisive vote, Jeff Rath of the Alberta Prosperity Project asserted, "We're not going anywhere." He claimed his group dominated the independence conversation over the last year and will continue advancing sovereignty education.
Alberta joins Quebec in placing sovereignty questions before citizens, echoing Quebec's 1980 and 1995 referendums where voters chose to stay in Confederation. The separation question was one of 10 posed to Albertans in the historic vote.
