Six Whales Being Moved Out of Marineland, Headed to U.S. Aquariums
The move follows federal approval and years of permit disputes as U.S. Association of Zoos and Aquariums member parks take the whales.
- On Monday, Marineland began relocating six belugas to aquariums in the United States, describing the transfer as a "complex" undertaking requiring months of meticulous planning and cross-border co-ordination.
- The shuttered Niagara Falls, Ont., tourist attraction attempted last year to ship its belugas and dolphins to China, but the fisheries minister blocked that move.
- Ottawa endorsed the plan to move whales to Shedd Aquarium in Chicago, Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta, SeaWorld locations, and Oceanografic Valencia in Spain, with the Association of Zoos and Aquariums rallying support.
- "Today marks a significant milestone," Marineland said in a statement, adding that the safe transfer of the whales remains its "unwavering priority."
- Previously, Marineland threatened to euthanize all its belugas if it did not receive emergency funds, a threat that made international headlines following Ottawa's rejection of the China export plan.

The 30 belugas and 4 dolphins of the Marineland amusement park, closed since the summer of 2024, will finally be able to move thanks to an agreement with a consortium of American and Spanish aquariums. Six of them now swim in their new home south of the border, after a transfer without incident.
