Coventry Bomb Discovery Live After Locals Evacuated
EOD soldiers used a controlled detonation after a 100-metre cordon forced 96 homes to evacuate, police said.
On Wednesday evening, soldiers from 8 Engineer Brigade safely detonated a World War Two bomb discovered during construction work at Sandy Lane Business Park in Coventry on Tuesday.
Historian Pete Walters believes the device was dropped during the November 1940 Blitz, the raid the Germans called Operation Moonlight Sonata, targeting the Radford factory site.
Coventry City Council staff supported 15 households totaling 37 residents in overnight accommodation after a 100-metre cordon resulted in 96 homes being evacuated from the area.
Following the successful operation, Assistant Chief Constable Mike O'Hara stated, "Our approach throughout has been to keep everyone safe," as all cordons were lifted and residents returned home.
85 years after the Blitz, the legacy of World War Two remains disruptive in Coventry, as this discovery illustrates how historical remnants continue impacting modern urban planning and community safety.
