Court rejects Lamido’s move to stop PDP National Convention
A federal court barred INEC from recognizing the PDP convention due to failure to hold congresses in 14 states and non-compliance with legal notice requirements.
- On Friday, a Federal High Court in Abuja ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission not to recognise the PDP convention outcome as plaintiffs sought to stop the National Convention in Ibadan, Oyo State, scheduled for November 15 and 16, 2025.
- The challenge stems from alleged procedural breaches: plaintiffs argued no valid Congresses were held in 14 states, mandatory notices were not issued, and the PDP National Chairman signed notices without the PDP National Secretary.
- The legal challenge, filed as FHC/ABJ/CS/2120/2025, names nine defendants including Independent National Electoral Commission , Peoples Democratic Party , Samuel Anyanwu, and Umar Baturrle.
- The party insists the ruling will not stop preparations, saying the Peoples Democratic Party said the Federal High Court judgment will not halt its national convention plans despite Justice James Omotosho warning that procedural breaches jeopardise the event.
- Defence counsel Paul Erokoro, SAN asked the court to decline jurisdiction, arguing convention matters are internal, while plaintiffs cited the 1999 Constitution, Electoral Act 2022 and PDP Constitution to enforce compliance.
