- On August 3, 2025, Holly Hatcher, a 62-year-old teacher from rural Virginia, was killed by stab wounds in a break-in at her home north of Harrisonburg.
- The attack took place just before midnight when Kevin Moses Walker, 41, an unknown assailant with no prior record of violence, forcibly entered the home armed with a sizable knife and inflicted fatal wounds on Holly while injuring her husband Michael Hatcher.
- Michael Hatcher, 65, sustained injuries during the attack but was able to get a firearm from his car and shoot Walker, who was later found dead in the driveway, while first responders discovered Michael outside the home.
- Two days prior to the incident, Walker reserved a spot at a campground in Endless Caverns and purchased a large knife from a Walmart nearby; his deserted vehicle was found near the caverns one day before the attack.
