Counting begins as polls close in British Columbia’s snap election
Elections BC is tabulating advance ballots electronically while hand counts begin for election-day votes in a race shaped by health care, housing and affordability.
Polls closed Saturday across British Columbia in the 2026 provincial election, a snap vote called by NDP Leader David Eby in the biggest gamble of his political career.
Eby initially justified the early election by citing a need for a new mandate to tackle challenges from U.S. President Donald Trump, but later attributed the call to ending frustrations of a "stalled out" legislature.
The five-week campaign saw major parties debate health care, housing, and cost of living. The NDP proposed a tax bracket for those making more than $1 million, while the Conservatives promised a $1,000 tax cut.
Elections BC reported that votes cast Saturday were tallied by hand, a departure from the 2024 election, citing tight timelines and technical requirements for getting tabulation machines operational.
Citizens now await election results as ridings including Nechako Lakes and Skeena prepare to welcome new MLAs. This report will be updated as final counts roll in.
