Councilor introduces proposal to extend youth curfew hours in Marion County
MARION COUNTY, INDIANA, JUL 8 – Proposal aims to reduce youth presence on streets earlier to curb violence after a downtown shooting, with possible penalties including fines and parenting classes, councilors said.
- On Monday night, Councilor Leroy Robinson introduced Proposal 232 to make 15-17-year-olds off the streets two hours earlier than the current state law.
- Following the downtown Indianapolis mass shooting that killed two teens and injured five, city leaders proposed stricter youth curfew hours to enhance safety.
- Specifically, Proposal 232 sets curfew hours: 11 p.m.–5 a.m. on weekends, 9 p.m.–5 a.m. weekdays, with fines and parenting classes for repeat violations.
- Next, Proposal 232 moves to the Public Safety and Criminal Justice Committee for review, with public comment scheduled for July 16 at 5:30 p.m.
- Ultimately, if approved in August, the stricter local curfew could set a precedent for other Indiana jurisdictions beyond the state's existing laws.
