Council of Europe Assembly Calls for Ban on Gender, Sexual Orientation ‘Conversion Practices’
The Parliamentary Assembly urged 26 member states to ban conversion practices citing increased suicide attempts among survivors, aiming to prevent harm to LGBTQ+ individuals.
- During Thursday, the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly approved a resolution to ban conversion practices with 71 in favor, 26 against, and 2 abstentions.
- After advocacy from groups and MPs earlier in January, Kate Osborne, Labour MP, tabled the resolution on 6 January to prevent and counter harm caused by conversion practices, citing their lack of scientific basis.
- Defined as attempts to change sexuality or gender identity, conversion practices are abusive acts linked to depression, PTSD, and higher suicide risks, with survivors more than twice as likely to attempt suicide, The Trevor Project found.
- Supporters said the vote increases pressure on the UK government, which has yet to ban conversion therapy, and campaigner Jess O'Thomson urged the UK to follow the Council's lead.
- Opposition figures argued the move risks intruding into medicine, education and freedom of thought, with Sex Matters, Bob De Brabandere, Belgian Senator, and Rónán Mullen demanding greater legal precision.
