Original Coronation Street Cast Member Alan Rothwell Dies Aged 89
Coronation Street said Rothwell, who created David Barlow, died at 89 after a career that also included Brookside and 56 episodes as Nicholas Black.
Alan Rothwell, the original Coronation Street cast member, died peacefully in hospital at age 89 following a short illness on Thursday.
Rothwell portrayed David Barlow, brother to Ken Barlow, from Coronation Street's 1960 debut until 1969; creator Tony Warren wrote the role specifically for him after their BBC Radio childhood work together.
Beyond Coronation Street, he starred as Nicholas Black in the Channel 4 soap Brookside during the 1980s and presented children's programmes Picture Box and Hickory House.
Coronation Street confirmed his death on social media, stating, "We're very sorry to hear of Alan Rothwell's passing and extend our sincerest condolences to his family at this very sad time."
His family said Rothwell's career spanned more than 70 years and he would be "fondly remembered and deeply missed" by family, friends, colleagues, and those touched by his work.
