‘Trump Is Copying Us’: Karnataka CM Shivakumar Says Congress Welfare Model Inspired US's $5,000 Plan
Shivakumar said Karnataka’s guarantee schemes have inspired similar welfare measures in several Indian states and in Trump’s proposed direct payment plan.
President Donald Trump promised a $5,000 payment to every American adult if Republicans retain Congress in the 2026 midterms; Karnataka Chief Minister DK Shivakumar claimed the proposal mirrors his government's welfare guarantee model.
Speaking in Bengaluru, Shivakumar argued his administration's welfare schemes inspired similar measures across India, including in Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Bihar, and now influence political approaches in the US.
Shivakumar highlighted Trump's shifting figures, noting, "He is talking about $5,000, $50,000 or $5,000," arguing that promising direct financial benefits confirms Congress's welfare-focused policies have global appeal.
Trump unveiled the plan in Dallas, Texas, during a September 9 Republican midterm rally; Shivakumar added that such global attention indicates the world is watching India's Constitution and principles his party upholds.
Beyond welfare debates, Shivakumar claimed several BJP and JD leaders are contacting him to join Congress, with officials compiling lists of prospective members who believe in the party's ideology.
