NHS consultants to go on two-day strike in England in November, says BMA
The British Medical Association said consultants will provide only emergency cover during the walkout after talks with the government failed to resolve pay concerns.
- Consultant doctors in England will stage a two-day strike on November 25 and 26 in a dispute over pay and pensions, the British Medical Association announced on Monday.
- The Government proposed a 2.4% pay rise for the 2027/2028 year, but unions branded the offer 'derisory' and claimed it falls short due to rising inflation and increasing demands on the NHS.
- Earlier this year, 76% of consultants who participated in the BMA ballot voted in favor of strike action, despite receiving a 3.5% pay increase this year.
- The strike will begin on November 25 at 06:59 GMT, with consultants providing emergency cover only following talks with the Government over the past month.
- Speaking on behalf of consultants, the BMA accused the Government of 'ignoring concerns' around 'wellbeing and workload' of medics, warning the offer 'beggars belief.
