Conservationists release rehabilitated vultures back into the wild on South African mountain
MAGALIESBURG MOUNTAINS, SOUTH AFRICA, JUL 15 – Five vultures rescued from injury and illegal trade were released to bolster a northern South Africa colony amid threats from poisoning and habitat loss, conservationists said.
- Vulpro and the Humane World for Animals released five vultures, organized by the organizations, on the Magaliesburg Mountains in northern South Africa.
- Vultures face threats from mass poisoning when poachers target other animals, making them vulnerable due to their scavenging habits.
- A standout case saw one vulture, while two Cape Vultures were rescued from the illegal wildlife trade.
- While one species regained status, the Cape Vulture remains classified as vulnerable, and six other native African vulture species are endangered or critically endangered.
- Though essential scavengers, vultures are vulnerable, with one saved after landing in a dam and becoming waterlogged, conservationists said.
