Connecticut man sentenced to prison for trying to join ISIS in Syria

- On Monday, U.S. District Judge Victor A. Bolden sentenced Ahmad Khalil Elshazly, 29, of West Haven to 92 months in prison for attempting to provide material support to ISIS, a designated foreign terrorist organization.
- Starting in September 2018, Elshazly swore allegiance to ISIS leadership and paid $500 to a purported facilitator to smuggle him from the United States to Turkey to join the terror group.
- Authorities arrested Elshazly in Stonington, Connecticut, as he prepared to board a boat; investigators discovered he operated a Discord server distributing hundreds of extremist propaganda memes and videos.
- While detained, Elshazly committed disciplinary violations, including drafting a plan in August 2025 for a coordinated uprising that featured diagrams of the housing unit and instructions for breaching secured areas.
- U.S. Attorney David X. Sullivan stated that investigating those who threaten national security remains a top priority, as the FBI New Haven Joint Terrorism Task Force successfully concluded this investigation.
