One dead in Comoros as clashes erupt over rising fuel prices
Fuel price increases sparked strikes by fishermen, transport workers and shopkeepers, and officials said 39 people have been detained since unrest began.
On Saturday, one person was killed and five injured in clashes between protesters and security forces in the Mpage area of Anjouan, prompting The Public Prosecutor's Office in Mutsamudu to open a judicial investigation.
Citing the Middle East conflict, the government raised diesel prices by 46% and gasoline prices by 35% on Monday, triggering a nationwide strike that now spans multiple sectors.
Tensions escalated on Friday after a meeting between the mayor of Mirontsy and the fishermen's association, which has been striking since Wednesday; protesters in Mutsamudu subsequently blocked roads with stones.
In the capital, Moroni, transport workers and shopkeepers have paralyzed public transportation, while the National Human Rights Commission reports 39 people have been detained since the strike began.
To ease tensions, the government announced cuts to official travel and a 40% reduction in customs duties, signaling an attempt to address public frustration over economic policy changes.
