Riot Police Disperse Morocco Fans After World Cup Exit in London
Metropolitan Police said several arrests were made as crowds clashed with officers, blocked traffic and set off fireworks after Morocco’s quarterfinal loss.
On Thursday night, Metropolitan Police officers in riot gear dispersed large crowds on Edgware Road in London following Morocco's 2-0 FIFA World Cup quarterfinal loss to France.
Supporters flooded the streets during the match, letting off flares and fireworks that halted traffic as smoke billowed through the area and clashes with officers escalated.
Footage shows clashes between supporters and officers, with one police member injured after appearing to fall; authorities have made several arrests in connection with the incident.
France's victory marked Morocco's second consecutive tournament elimination, leaving no African nations remaining in the FIFA World Cup competition after a historic quarterfinal run.
While some feared riots in Paris following recent tournament history, chaos instead erupted in London, where supporters jumped on vehicles and blocked traffic on Edgware Road.
